the naturally occurring purple-leaved special form, is a deciduous clump-former, happy in the rock garden or understorey in light, dry shade. Excellent as an accent plant. Starry, white flowers on wiry stems dance all summer above grassy leaves that are bronze speckled with chocolate on top and grey-green underneath.
Not a true grass. Growth starts in spring with thin, fleshy, bronzy-brown spotted, grassy leaves which grow quickly once started. An easily grown species and a hardy member of the genus. Herbaceous in nature these small bulbs multiply readily to form dense clumps of growth up to 8” tall. Flowers arrive a little later and the first flowers are the largest of the year. These are borne on thin wiry stems and are held on the upper parts in vast numbers. Each is quite small, star-like and near enough pure white. Tiny black seeds heads follow. Repeat flowering if dead headed. Tolerates -5°c to -12°c. Provide shelter in colder areas.
