Encrusted saxifrages absorb minerals through their roots and expel the excess calcium salts on the edges of their leaves, giving the encrusted effect. They appreciate the addition of some lime grit in a free draining mix. They all grow in the form of a low rosette with a taller airy spike of small flowers in late spring to summer. Some are absolutely miniscule and many make very good, showy, container plants.
